Identification

Potato Leafhopper life stages.

Line drawings of potato leafhopper coutesy of Purdue University's Corn & Soybean Field Guide (CRW) and Field Crop Pest Management Manual (IPM-1) PLH.
  • Adults are lime green and can fly.

  • Nymphs are yellow-green and cannot fly.

  • PLH adults overwinter in the South, then travel to New York on spring storms.

  • Females lay their eggs in alfalfa leaves after arrival.

  • Each generation lives approximately 28 days. There may be more than one generation per season.

  • The greater the heat, the faster the generations will develop.

  • Both adults and nymphs can cause damage.

  • Damage symptoms consist primarily of V-shaped yellow patches on the leaves and possibly stunting of the plant.

  • Primary value loss occurs from the reduction of protein. However, excessive feeding may cause dry matter yield loss as well.
