Managing Bacterial Diseases of Tomatoes and Peppers

Introduction

Bacterial diseases on tomatoes and peppers can be devastating. There are three bacterial pathogens on tomato that cause serious damage to crops in New York: bacterial speck caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato, bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas campestrispv vesicatoria, and bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensissubsp. michiganensis. The primary bacterial pathogen on pepper is bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas campestrispv vesicatoria, and on rare occasions bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensissubsp. michiganensis.
