Managing Bacterial Diseases of Tomatoes and Peppers

return to Managing Bacterial Diseases of Tomatoes and Peppers, CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION

Bacterial diseases on tomatoes and peppers can be devastating. There are three bacterial pathogens on tomato that cause serious damage to crops in New York: bacterial speck caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato, bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas campestrispv vesicatoria, and bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensissubsp. michiganensis. The primary bacterial pathogen on pepper is bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas campestrispv vesicatoria, and on rare occasions bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensissubsp. michiganensis.

OBJECTIVES

  • Evaluate seed treatment options for their effects on seed germination and vigor, and bacterial inoculum reduction.

  • Evaluate foliar and soil treatment options for bacterial canker in the greenhouse and field.
