PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Responsibilities
- Educational outreach in community IPM.
- Demonstration of IPM.
- Research of alternative tools for pest management.
- Collaboration with county Extension educators on projects related to IPM.
- Participation in county-level committees that focus on pesticide use and IPM.
- Training workshops for all audiences.
- Assistance and problem solving for schools and municipalities with particular pest problems.
- Diagnostics for Nassau CCE.
Current/Ongoing Projects
- Stinging Insect IPM, demonstration and implementation of stinging insect management techniques that are least toxic, focused on school and municipal settings. Some research will be involved.
- Municipal IPM workshops, slide set, and manual for future trainings.
- Demonstration and workshop on grub control, using nematodes.
- Researching possibilities in biological control of carpenter ants and stinging insects, and alternative controls of bed bugs.
Accomplishments (Past 2 Years)
- I have formed strong links with industry groups, various school and municipal administrators and staff, and individuals key in environmental activism.
- I wrote a brochure focusing on mosquito biology and management that has become popular due to the threat of West Nile virus.
- I was awarded a grant from the National Research Initiative, USDA, for a post-doctoral research project. The grant awarded approx. $73,000/yr. and was not accepted in lieu of a position with CIPM.
