Effect of Barley Windbreak Placement on Onion Maggot Damage 1997

Project Leader: Jan van der Heide

Objectives:

1. Examine effects of the presence and absence of a barley nurse crop on the number of onion maggot flies in onion fields.

2. Observe the effect of planting density of a barley nurse crop on the number of onion maggot flies in onion fields.

Results:

There were no significant differences in number of flies caught in fields with a barley nurse crop and fields without one. There were no significant differences in total onion maggot trap catch counts or in female onion maggot trap catch counts among the various barley densities on any date. There were significant differences in male onion maggot trap catch counts among the various barley densities on May 27 and June 2, but not on other dates. In these two cases, the greater the barley density, the higher the trap catch.
